We are currently seeking an individual to assume the demanding and rewarding position of Superintendent for the City’s Water and Sewer Division. Under the general supervision of the Manager, Works Operations, the incumbent is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Water & Sewer and Pumphouse Divisions, including the operation of the Water Treatment Plant. This includes scheduling jobs, allocating materials and equipment, and coordinating and supervising the activities and performance of the employees and contractors working for the respective divisions. The incumbent enforces safety regulations, policies and procedures and initiates the development and implementation of safe work practices. The incumbent plans, implements and controls operations and maintenance schedules, in order to maintain all piped water, sewer, pumphouses, liftstations, fire hydrants, reservoirs and sewage treatment/disposal in a sound and economically functional manner.
The ideal candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures used to construct and repair water, sewer, storm sewers and related infrastructures, as well as mechanical applications in the pumphouses, liftstations and reservoirs. The work requires a comprehensive knowledge of municipal public works operation and construction techniques which are normally gained through a combination of education and experience such as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) diploma or the completion of grade twelve and journeyperson trades status in a related field. A Fifth Class Stationary Engineering Certificate is required. In addition, the incumbent must have or be willing to obtain NWT Water & Wastewater Operator certifications, including Class 2 Water Treatment System Operator and Class I Water Distribution System Operator. The incumbent requires a minimum of ten (10) years of related experience and five (5) years in the supervision of a municipal or heavy construction crew involved in piped water, sewer and storm sewer construction or maintenance. The position also requires a high level of motivational, communication and interpersonal skills and a proven ability to coordinate and supervise contractors.
